Lightly on the Land.
New works by Bryce Brown.
January 25th - February 14th 2008, Zohar Gallery, Mt Maunganui.
Lightly on the Land is a body of work that captures an old world grace, beauty, style and elegance but with a twist.
These figures don’t just wile their days away in idle gossip, sipping cocktails or indulging in tea parties (although they certainly may partake in these events at times!) They are honest, humble and beautiful creatures who dwell lightly on the land, gracing it with their presence as they go about their daily lives.
Bryce says, “This is my strongest, most defined and most honest body of work yet. These paintings reflect a lot on the lives of my wife and I. Catherine has an amazing ability to be in the garden up to her knees in dirt, transforming within minutes into the most amazingly beautiful woman who could dine quite comfortably with royalty! This is about New Zealand women who carry an air of realness.”
Texture has always been an important part of Bryce’s work. In the past, the paint itself formed physical texture. This is still apparent in the new paintings, but they also incorporate textural elements such as images of grass, shells, woven baskets or flax mats.
Bryce’s painting style captures the boldness of the Modernists, the grace of the Masters and exude a true sense of the classic New Zealander. His works have captured the imaginations of collectors from New Zealand, the UK, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, Australia, Scotland and in 2005 one of his works were added to the John Deere Art Collection in Illinois, USA.
The 2007 book New Zealand’s Favourite Artists features Bryce as one of the sixty artists who are currently impacting on the New Zealand art scene. His images have also been used in the 2008 Calendar of the same name, as well as other various corporate calendars throughout NZ.
This will be Bryce’s eighth solo exhibition. He is a full time artist living in Mount Maunganui with his wife Catherine (who runs The Dance House Tauranga) and their four children.
Don’t miss out on the much anticipated preview of Lightly on the Land, Thursday January 24th, 6-8 PM. Bryce will be giving a short talk on his life as an artist and what motivates him to paint what he paints.
The exhibition then runs till February 14th. R.S.V.P to 07 574 7428 or fra@zohar.co.nz.
“Bryce is an artist who moves forward in leaps from one painting to the next capturing the essence of his subjects in a distinctive style that is powerful yet subtly moving.”
Denis Robinson. Editor of New Zealand’s Favourite Artists (2007, Saint Publishing). |

Artist biography
Bryce has had seven solo exhibitions.
His work is in private collections in New Zealand, Europe and the USA including the John Deere art collection in Moline, Illinois.
Born in Auckland in 1971, Bryce grew up in the lush Northland surrounds of Whangarei. He began to take art seriously in the mid 90s, with the outstanding beauty of the Northland area providing him with a major source of inspiration.
High passion for art became the main drive for a 12-country world tour in 1998 taking in all the major European galleries. Again, nature and the people he observed and met in his travels provided him with ideas and artistic stimulation.
On his distinctive Euro/Polynesian figurative style, Bryce says “I like to explore human nature and movement through my paintings. I use strong line, texture and colour to accentuate human form and emotion. I have my favourite artists and although they definitely have had an influence on me, I feel I have taken just enough from history to add to the style I have now. Whilst it is hard not to be influenced by the likes of Picasso and Leonardo, an artist needs to find what it is about these greats that they love and pursue their own style with the same amount of passion as they did. ”
Bryce currently lives at Mt.Maunganui, New Zealand with his wife Catherine and their girls Olivia
and Brianna and their sons Henri and Oscar.
Artist's Statement
As a young country, New Zealand is developing rapidly with so many changes in the last one hundred years, we sometimes struggle to keep up. It's diversity is as great as the figures that dwell upon it. We have a lot of different cultures that are influencing the face of our nation, some of these going back one hundred and thirty years such as the Europeans, the Chinese gold miners of Otago and the Dalmation wine makers and even further back, the Maori migrated from Polynesia in canoes about the 9th century to 13th century AD.
I have aimed to capture the people and surroundings of the New Zealand landscape, reflecting on my fascination with the parallels between the European Modernist movements and the settlers of this country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This Modernist influence mixed with New Zealand culture is evident in my most recent figurative paintings and gives them a truely unique, international flavour.
Technical information
All work is all acrylic painted on museum quality 10 oz. Cotton duck. The paintings are finished with an isolation coat (acrylic gel) which keeps it separate from the solvent based varnish that is then applied. This gives a great finish which is highly UV resistant, helps eliminate scuffing and can be removed (back to the isolation coat) for future restoration. All of the paintings are on a 3 cm deep frame with the paint continuing around the edges.
