View from Te Ranga is another view across the valley from the 1864 battle site. I am told that although the actual site (which I may also paint at some stage) is above this valley (thus the title) Pa sites often were built near this kind of geography to provide a way of safe retreat. To accentuate this, I have exaggerated the slope of the hills to the left, almost making them look like a type of natural fortification. The hill on the horizon has a slight gash in it, a natural feature of the landscape the way it is now, and one I have chosen to keep as a subtle indication of a wound, inflicted on the land and on the people.
